ASUU STRIKE UPDATE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is expected to meet with the Federal government today. It will be recalled that at the end of their last meeting, ASUU President had said that the meeting will resume today. While confirming today's meeting, the acting Director of the Ministry of Labor and Employment said the Minister of Labour and Employment would preside over the meeting. It will be recalled that ASUU chapters across the country had during the week voted whether to end the strike or not. SCHOOLS THAT HAVE VOTED FOR ASUU STRIKE TO BE CALLED OFF THIS WEEK 1. ASUU STRIKE UPDATE: See what Prof. Okebukola said

Former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Peter Okebukola, has said that the dividend of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), will be huge in the universities. Okebukola, who disclosed this while speaking with The Tribune, on the issues that would possibly shape the sector in 2019, said: “The dividend of the ASUU strike will be huge injection of more funds into our universities.” According to him, 2019 will turn out to be one of the best years in funding education in Nigeria in recent times. Okebukola also pointed out that because of improved funding, there will be marked improvements in schools and universities in physical resourcing and welfare of staff in the universities will also be enhanced. He also posited that this year, will see to the attainment of not less than 60% of the objectives of the Ministerial Strategic Plan 2016-2019. OAU flays ASUU, schedules exams

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have been re-assured that nothing would disrupt the 2017/2018 Rain Semester Examinations as the University Management have put machinery in motion to make it hitch-free. In a statement, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, noted that the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was not effective in the institution contrary to the union’s claims. He said: “The general public is quite aware that the 43rd Convocation Ceremony for the 2015/2016 and 2016/3017 graduating sets of the University was successfully held from Tuesday, 11th to Friday, 14th December, 2018. 2019 UTME: JAMB stops use of cyber cafes for registration of candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it will no longer use cyber cafes for registration of candidates, beginning from the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said this on Thursday on the sideline of a meeting with proprietors of Computer Based Test (CBT) centres at the University of Lagos. “We are no longer going to allow the cyber cafes to do the registration exercise for prospective candidates because they are extorting candidates and overcharging them. “They also do services they do not have the capacity to do, coupled with the fact that there was no way of tracking them because they were not registered. “Another major reason is the mix-up they create on the data of the candidates. Some will just ask the candidates to write their names and other details down for them. “On accumulating such data, they now get all of them mixed-up, thereby creating problems for these candidates. “We know there
